Probably just an effort to "modernize" like everything else. Manual chokes on cars were common until ?? Honda still had them in about the early 80's. People expect things to progress and for most people, not having a choke or an idle speed control is a sign of progress. They don't want to have to control anything. They want automation - even if they don't know how to use it.
My mother is funny. She constantly turns the thermostat up and down rather than just leave it alone. In our house, we essentially never touch the thermostat this time of year. We don't have the the fancy programmable one either. We just leave it alone. The temperature stays pretty constant. We have noticed that the thermostat appears to be somewhat affected by the dining room light over the table. It has 7 60W bulbs in it and I think it produces enough heat to make the thermostat think the house is warm enough. If we leave the light on in the evening then it gets cool upstairs. I think MBUSA figured out around 1980 that their customers were too stupid to use it properly, and the S123 turbo didn't come out until 1981. Either that or it wasn't absolutely necessary on the 1980 big cam engines, so MBUSA dropped it to save money. I'd like a dash knob rheostat on the OM60x cars with ELR.
