Hi George,
I did the front end in my uncle's 300TD last year and found that the
lower control arms had corrosion where the bushings fit and was no
longer clean, round, etc.  I exchanged the bushings to the dealer for
new control arms since I couldn't see the possibility of installing
the new bushings in these corroded holes.

So, I'm more curious about the condition of the control arms in your
case... are they really clean shiny metal where the bushing slides in?

After my experience, I decided that most cars this old will probably
have the same issue and I should only consider buying new control arms
in the future.  They were not that much more expensive, considering
the time they can save.
