Yes, plastic bushings; 'had 'em replaced on my manny tranny 80 240D, auto 81 300D and auto 91 350SDL due rattles you described. I finked-out and had indy do 'em years ago while the cars were in shop for something else.

Subject: [MBZ] Rattlely shifter

My '84 190D has a rattle in the shifter (its an auto). Its not the console or the shifter surround or anything I can touch topside. The noise goes away if I push down on and pull slightly back on the shifter itself. The shifter seems to have a lot of slop, are there plastic bushings on the auto shifter like on the manual? Are they easy to replace? It sounds just like a bushing rattling on a rod.
