There is no problem checking firearms in your luggage as long as
they are not loaded and you tell them its there.

My dad lived on the Kitsap Peninsula, WA, and when he died, we went to
clean up his place. We found a loaded .45 under the matress - first
time I had ever handled a handgun. Amazingly, we were able to unload
it without discharge. I stuffed it in a duffel bag of his and checked
it as luggage. Try that now days.
