I don't remember what theTD struts looked like. I threw them out years ago. I read that article when you posted it the first time. With that info, it might be possible to do a Catheyesque repair on them.

The 87 TD struts are different and I have been told by several different authoritative sources that they are not rebuildable.

Does that crimped-on cap look anything like your strut?
Mine doesn't have that.
