Thanks, I do have some books on rebuilding chebbie small blocks, I will have to refresh on the subject. Looks like the biggest PITA aspect will be getting the intake and all that junk off the top first.

Should not pose any major problems.
Take it apart and put it back together. Not much out there simpler than a basic small block Chevy.
Should not need impact wrench to remove head bolts.
Probably best to have 1/2" drive socket and breaker bar to get them loose.
Will need a torque wrench to tighten them back up correctly.
Hope the block surface and head are ok where the blown gasket is. Might have to have some resurfacing if not. Not sure if the head bolts are reusable. Many are. Some are not. Should be able to find out when you get the gaskets. Parts people should be able to tell you and sell you new bolts if need be. Should not be very expensive. Studs are supposed to be better but sort of overkill on a basic not hot rodded engine. Get a manual and read through it if you are not familiar with resetting the valves. I am not all that familiar with the newer Vortec engines. The last one I had apart was a 1986 350. On it, one just got the adjustment close and then fired it up and loosened the adjuster off until it rattled, then tightened until it stopped rattling and then 3/4 turn further if I recall. T'other way is to turn the push rods with fingers until the play is gone and then tighten the additional 3/4 turn. Have to have timing marks set and do certain cylinders which is why I said to get a manual and read up on how to do it.

Good time to change valve seals etc. Timing chain?? At 80K a tosss up?

I think the head gasket on my truck (96 Shivvalay 305 [I think that is what it is, the smaller set up on the 350, not that it really matters] engine) has gone bad -- it is barfing coolant out the back, best I can tell it is coming out the back of the head/block joint. Looks like I am going to have to do surgery on it soon. Never done this sort of thing before, my main concern is taking off the head bolts. I assume they do not come out too easily? Do I need to use a regular socket wrench and just tug on them, or will an air impact wrench be better to get them out? Should I get new bolts or go with studs when putting it back together?

Vortec engine, deathcool in it originally though I have lately been using the universal stuff, about 80k miles.

Any knowledge appreciated.
