Its worth trying a different modem. The Motorola 2210's are dirt cheap on eBay. I've had no problem using ones from different areas (Bell South modems work in SBC Northeast region). If your link fails, chances are you will notice it on the next new request which will be preceded by a dns lookup - so it may not be a DNS issue even though you get a DNS error.
Try 8.8.8.8 .
