Has anyone suggested a squirt of oil in each cylinder to help seal the rings and putting 24 volts to the starter? Briefly, of course, so you don't burn up the starter but that will surely make it spin faster. I've never tried it on a diesel but it works wonders for old worn out Chebby smallblocks and AMC 6's.

the update
I primed the system until the fuel ran clear out the return line. We
turned it on and let it glow for a while, and then turned the key with the
throttle to the floor. It turned over like I think it should, and you
could hear it fire every few revs or so, but it never took. Kept the
starter turning until the battery had nothing left. Dang, what should I
look at now? I'm thinking pull the valve cover off, set the valves and
check timing chain stretch/condition. If that is all good, then a
compression check is in order. Any other suggestions?

my '82 300D hasn't been titled in at least 10 years, and probably hasn't

I did put the 27mm socket on the crank pully, and it feels normal. The
coolant shows no sign of contamination and the oil level is right between
the add and max lines. What suggestions do ya'll have to do a wake-up??
TIA all,

A tow start will often work much more quickly than anything else does,
but only because you can get the engine running faster and with the
engine running faster, even seriously low compression CAN be overcome.

Remember, the starter seldom goes much faster than 300-400 rpm. A tow
start at 30 mph can get the engine going at thousands of rpm.

If the problems relate to the valves and rings not yet seating in, the
next time you start the car - it will start MUCH more easily. If the
problem is valves hanging open because of improper adjustment, broken
rings/scored cylinder walls or poor fuel distribution and supply, the
the engine will remain VERY hard to start.
