Ah, finally found the original post (I'm on vacation using a 31Kb modem connection....).
What is removing the rain forests is not alternative fuels (unless we start burning wood or methanol in our diesels) but logging, both to farm and to provide lumber and ACTIVATED CHARCOAL -- all carbon steel currently produced is using tropical hardwood charcoal for the carbon source. It's very pure, has nice handling properties, and is cheap.... We will soon cure the problem once we cut the last tree down and suck the last oil well dry. Peter
