Hmmm..."Cheap" may not be the most accurate description. The air
suspensions appears to need a rebuild- from $6000 -$10,000 - and the rust
"trunk, wheel wells and underneath" is just the start - these cars are
notorious for rusting in around the headlight buckets, lower fenders, doors,
and front bumper carrier - which also carries the radiator.
OTOH, They're absolutely awesome cars!! With amazing acceleration - my 72
280SE 4.5 (without air suspension) would chirp the tires at 45-50 mph when
I hit passing gear! And if the engine was tuned "perfectly" the tires
properly inflated and the driver gentle in driving habits, it would get
14-15mpg! But the ride was butter smooth, utterly quiet and very
impressive. Man, oh Man! What a car!
With 6 more days to go before the auction ends it'll be interesting to see
what the final bid is -- but I fear my heart would rule my head if I say
this car for $500!!
Luckily I discovered the magic of MB Diesels before I went bankrupt trying
to keep breathing life into old MB gassers! ;-)
