Yes, it's possible. One night about 25 years ago, SWMBO came in and said she couldn't get our 80 240D in gear. 'Shonuf; I went out and checked. Clutch was engaged and would not disengage. I took clutch out and found one of the little coil springs inside it about the size of my thumb broken and lodged so that the clutch could not disengage. 'Bought new clutch from stealer ($98) and replaced it.
