In the one I took apart, the synchros were worn and several bearings were burned. Don't know it it was from running with no oil or from the gear lube.

Yes, that's true, especially in a wet climate like Portland.

 grinding gears in cold weather.

Doesn't the sulfur in the gear lube attack the synchros?
