This would be my guess too. However if you're getting the chance to crank 3 different times for 30 seconds I'm doubting the battery itself. Maybe a slight corrosion on the cables? Easy to check at the battery end.

Not start, excessive cranking, lots of white smoke. Started like new about 32F, no go at all below. New battery fixed it right up.
