The answer to both is yes. They are perfectly compatible in both directions.
As for drives, you have two choices: Consumer Enterprise You will pay probably 3x-4x more for the equivalent enterprise drive, depending on the vendor, but it will have a far better MTBF. It has been my experience of the last couple of years, part of which was working directly in an operation where both laptop and desktop computers were being repaired on a daily basis, that hard drives are pretty much a commodity. In other words, it's so competitive that suppliers sell based on price, and willingly eat the warranty units that occur. If you're interested in reliability, spend the money up front and buy an enterprise grade drive. There is a really good study done by Google (I think) on hard drive MTBFs and how they are really misleading. You might want to Google it and read.
