At George AFB west of Victorville, I lived on eastern edge of base. On Friday evenings, we could see 2 solid rows of red tail lights several miles long 4 or 5 miles away across the desert going north on I-15 toward Vegas; on Sunday evenings, two rows of headlights headed south.

Last time I was on the 15 heading out of San Bernardino towards Vegas there was no sand storm. It was heavy traffic with the right lane cruising about
80-90 and the left lane was going around 100-105 MPH. The only people
getting pulled over were losing their licenses. What amazed me more than
the speed was that you could see miles of tail lights traveling across the
desert. I left like I was part of a high speed train or convoy. It wasn't
until the Nevada line that traffic broke up.

I have driven through dust storms in New Mexico. One of them involved a
road closure on I-40. We were traveling East. New Mexico drives
instinctively veered across the median to I-40 W and doubled back to the
next exit and took the local road which was not closed.

Sand can make a good cushion or speed reduction medium if one runs off

Sand reminds me: In about '76 family and I were northbound on I-15
between Victorville, CA, an Las Vegas in a sand storm. 'Had been in left
lane; visibility got really bad; I said aloud, "I better stay in right
lane, some fool could be coming the wrong way and meet me head-on."
Shonuff, less than coupla minutes after I said that, suddenly a car
appeared in left lane headed wrong way!

The speed limit on I-10 in Far West Texas is posted at 80PH last time I
drove it, and there was talk of changing it to 85 MPH. I'm not sure if
that went through. There is nothing but sand for 500 miles between San
Antonio and El Paso.

Cruise at 80 and pass at 90.
