The supply is hotter and less dense, the water shrinks going through
the heater core.

Wouldn't that support the theory that the return hose should be
larger?
The return hose is 5/8 and the supply is 11/16.

I tried using a length of Gates heater hose, but because of
the bends, the hose either kinks or narrows by the heater
core. I could plumb in a 45 degree fitting, I but found the
dealer part numbers for these hoses. I will just pay for the
dealer hoses and eliminate the extra fitting. I also noticed
that the return line is 5/8" but the supply line is 11/16".
I'm not sure why they made the return line 1/16" bigger.
After the resistance of flowing through the heater core, a lower
resistance hose allows it to flow at the same rate as the higher
pressure inlet hose.
