I was wrong, again!
The sensor near the the thermostat is for the aux. fan.
The engine thermometer for the gauge is in the head under the intake manifold. 
Doh!
Reads 464 deg F at room temp and falls slowly from the heat of my hand.
I have one and it it's yours if you want.
