this may be truly obvious BUT

do not let the wrench or screwdriver or whatever you use, touch ANYTHING else.
If you touch it to "ground" you are going to see sparks.

The idea of using a push button device intended for such is a good idea. The alligator clips supplied will normally have a rubber shield around them to prevent troubles like that.

I doubt you need to use anything too heavy duty as all you are doing is energizing the coil on the solenoid. Solenoid is just an automotive word for a relay. The solenoid will be the thing that is subject to the big current draw and not your wrench or screwdriver.
