Hip replacements are really not that big a deal anymore. My then 85 year old 
grandmother was up and walking the next day. Still doing fine with it 8 years 
later.

Knees on the other hand are a different story. My mother had both done nearly 2 
years ago and recovery was tough although she was also up and walking the next 
day and home a day or two after that. Apparently once your knees are replaced 
theres a good chance you'll never be able to kneel again.

Indeed!

There's a guy in New Mexico that is doing hip replacements from the
front. I'm told it reduces the need to cut muscles significantly.
