I did a little research into Ssang Yong a few years back, I was interested in buying a Daewoo Lanos and was looking into the company. At the time Daewoo was interested in purchasing controlling stock in Ssang Yong so I was reading on them as well. Standard motor company practices. The Musso was going to be brought to the U.S. and rebadged as a Daewoo SUV, but MB was fighting the import because they all had MB engines. Though, they are Korean MB engines. Ssang Yong has a license to build the inline 6 cylinders for their vehicles.
The chairman is in fact a W124 chassis, also licensed from MB. Built and rebadged much in the same was as many other vehicles, specifically the DSM twins/triplets. Plymouth Laser, Eagle Talon and Mitsubishi Eclipse. Some differences, many likenesses. Though the Chairman uses a Ssong Yang developed V6 engine and not the licensed MB engine but it is mated to a MB transmission. This wasn't just a "Hey, let's steal a MB and copy it" type of thing, from what I read (memory serving) Mercedes invested some money and had a partnership with Ssang Yong to try and get their products into Korea under a "Korean" name plate. Then, Daewoo started going down, couldn't buy Ssang Yong, got bought by GM, I traded my Lanos on a Suzuki Aerio SX and now the Chevy Aveo is what the Lanos would have been today. Glad I have three Mitsu's in my driveway right now. *laughs* On 12/30/05, Sunil Hari <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I'm not making this up - just read about it on wikipedia: > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SsangYong_Motor_Company > > Look at the link marked "Chairman," then go to their website and take a > look.
