This is actually material for a book - Papal Mercedes...coffee table type book - lots of pictures. Mercedes has typically GIVEN a new pope an MB. I saw a neat picture of John XXIII blessing his new gift - forget what it was. Paul VI was given a 600, I think. Shortly after Card. Ratzinger was elected Benedict XVI, he was cleaning out his old apartment and moving into the Papal apartment at the Vatican and he showed up in a W126. Anyway, MB doesn't give the pope junk, so it would make a fascinating book. Chris

There's a great photo from 1964 of Paul VI in a 300d landaulet, followed by 14 other Vatican MBs. On 1/7/06, LT Don wrote: > > Now, don't tease Chris -- he is really into this. For the last 200 years, the Popes have had their clothes and vestments made at Gammarelli's in Rome. Benedict XVI, I think, is using a group of German nuns to make is clothes. In a catholic newspaper from Germany, they carried an article called "Soutanenkrieg" or "Cassock/vestment War". The Pope has been spied with, I think Guccie shoes and another fancy brand of sunglasses...rather than going through the old suppliers of Papal-ware. Wouldn't be surprised if the Gucci's are cheaper! Will be very interesting to see the first German Pope in ?Hundreds of years in Germany...not to mention Stuttgart/MB heaven.
