Two ideas.  The typical generator is 220V center tapped, rated
at (let's say) 7kW.  But that's half per side, and most people
don't check the two windings separately for current overload.
Overload one side (up to 2x) and you burn out the winding.
Then the party's over.

I forgot to mention.
Was working when parked, so probably not an overload, unless it got blown immediately on startup during the next power failure.
