Do bear in mind however, that the USA likes to export things too and if everyone bought only goods made in their own country there would be no exports.

Like it or not, there is a world economy and we do have to try to fit into it.

Theoretically, if they can do it cheaper, or better, or whatever, then it does make sense to buy it from them. Hopefully, we too have products that we are better at and they will buy those from us.

Agreed.

Walmart has only given people what they want. As for their personnel polices,
well, that's a whole 'nother issue.

I do what Curt does as much as possible. I try to find high quality, American
made products when I buy something. Better yet, whenever possible, I try to
find local businesses who produce the product or sell them. I believe in
keeping my money at home when possible, and while I often pay more for
something I could get cheaper at Walmart, I know my money is staying close by
and benefitting my local community.

If we did this Walmart would not go away, but would be seriously diminished, I
believe.

You're right of course but the solution is deceptively simple.

Don't shop there. Buy a smaller amount of high quality items. TELL PEOPLE WHAT
YOU'VE DONE. Buy them high quality made in the west (so USA, Canada, Europe)
items so they see how good they are. Help people know that they don't need all
that junk and that they can actually live better without it.

An example I'm completely taken with "Darn Tough" socks http://darntough.com/
made in Vermont they're about the best socks I've ever had. They're Merino wool, warm in
the winter, cool in the summer. I have both the hike/trek and lifestyle.
VERY expensive I pay as much for 1 pair as I'd have paid for a dozen cheap
white tube socks but they're a joy to wear. When I only had one pair I looked
forward to the day each week when I get to wear them. Now I have 4 or 5 pairs
and I'm annoyed on the days they're all in the wash. I won't go back to cheap
socks, my feet are too important to me.

I am not the world's biggest fan of Walmart. I don't know what my wife
buys there but personally about the only things I have acquired from
them in recent times is some Zerex coolant and some Mobil1 oil.

However I will come to their defence again. They are not alone. It does
not seem to matter where I shop these days, the majority of goods seem
to have a "Made in China" stamp on them.

It is sad but it is true and as I said before, we have done it to
ourselves and there is no easy fix to it.

Big business found cheaper goods and we bought them. We are big time
consumers. The advertising flyers promise good deals on junk we don't
need every day. We buy it and haul it home and store it.

I really don't think you can say it is Walmart's fault.
