'Reminds me: On a Sunday afternoon in summer of 1961, SWMBO, the two
children and I went out to an air port near Mercedes, Texas, in the lower
Rio Grande Valley, to check on some WWII war birds I had heard about. As we
approached the airport, I heard the unmistakable and "musical" roar of a
P-51 approaching. I pulled over to the side of the road and got out of the
car to view and listen properly. Approaching very fast and just above tops
of the abundant cotton plants between us were three 18-to-20-feet diameter
propellers, a P-51 in the lead and 2 Navy aircraft (Hellcats or Bearcats)
staggered off to the side, headed straight at me. I say it like that,
'cause what I saw first was all propeller - 3 of 'em. I'd swear that they
had to climb a bit to clear me standing beside the car as they whipped
across me and pitched out for landings. I recovered enough to pull on into
the small airport and waited for them to taxi up beside the car. That was
the first time I saw the Confederate (now Commemorative) Air Force. The
three "colonels" and I talked for nearly an hour (as long as I thought SWMBO
could take it) in and around the 3 fighters and a B-17 they had just
acquired.
