Both my Ryobi string trimmer (4 cycle) and chainsaw (2 cycle) were fed ethanol laced fuel before I'd heard of the reported problems. They were run hard, and put up wet (gas still in the tanks). After two years, neither one would start and run. After replacing the HARD fuel lines, trying to clean the carbs and failing to get running engine, I bought new carbs for both of them. Putting a new carb on the trimmer cured it - it runs fine, and has had no ethanol since. I finally really needed the chain saw, so installed the new carb on it, but no change - still would not run. Finally I changed the spark plug, and IT RAN.
So, who knows if ethanol laced fuel will kill small engines? I don't . . . Since it is prohibited by the FAA, and repairs are EXPENSIVE, and failures can be deadly, I don't let the stuff near my Cessna. The Ford is approved for up to E85, but has never had E anything, so far, since I fill it at the same time I buy fuel for the Cessna.
