The wife does not want to have down time and to deal with issues. A newer lease and a dealer loaner...

Depends on how busy you are and how much you value a) the time required to

Getting a car to the mechanic and back is a real hassle for us as we both
work long hours and fight la traffic. Then you pay a huge repair bill for
something that should be simple but requires disassembly of half the engine
eg replacing a starter at 75,000 miles on a 2008 california bmw or temp
sensor melted into downpipe on 3y old touareg tdi and you wonder why you
own the damned things. Then the service light comes back on and you cant
smog it until that is fixed so its back to the shop again. Meanwhile wife
is getting pulled over on freeway for expired tags on Saturday morning with
kids in car when she needs to be in the OR. It may save money to own but
for us it is looking penny wise pound foolish. New cars arent worth jack
after a few years no matter what. Accountant says cost of ownership is same
particularly if there is business use involved. Game, set, match to
leasing. Yes check residuals and get the best deal you can.

I like my 123 tdt but only because it is cool and doesnt depreciate. Now
you guys have me thinking it needs a new turbo though - kkk k26. Some shaft
play less than .125 prob 0.0625. I will prob pull and take it to becs for a
rebuild on general principle. 185000 mi.

Leasing is tricky at best and is rarely a win unless you can have some
control over what they establish as the residual. If you want a car payment
and a new car every 2-3 years, it could make sense.

I saw a 2012 G-something at the MB dealer last week that was being prepped
for delivery. Sticker was $31k.

Seems like an old 123/126 in good shape would be just the ticket.

Otherwise a well maintained G-wagen.

I had a 2006 Sprinter that was great, but I dont like the newer ones as
much.
Everybody here in LA knows better than to buy a new Merc or BMW. Lease
them while they run well and pass them off for others to deal with after a
few years. No trips to the mechanic and you get a new one every few years
instead of driving the same car for a decade. Cost of ownership is the same
unless miles are high.
New luxury cars are simply not designed to be easily or cheaply
maintained. That is why they depreciate so dramatically.

OK I realize that asking for opinions from y'all is like throwing

I am trying to get out ahead of a likely need here in the next few
months for a newer car of some sort, which I would think should be
a Benz diesel. Could be a lease or purchase. Lease would be new,
purchase would be something 2-5 yr old maybe, reliability would be
the key issue for potentially a coupla thousand miles a month. I
am thinking an E or ML, maybe a GL. The 4WD (or AWD or whatever
it is) is attractive. Buying a new GL or S would be awesome, but
my lottery tickee did not win yet.

I took a look at Carmax, there are a fair number of ML diesels
around, and Es too, all 4 years or newer. A few GLs but they are
spendy. I looked at the Benz CPOs and there were a few but
pricier it seemed, maybe a bit newer inventory on average.

    Have at it.
