You are correct, Craig. I don't know of any reason not to get a 420, other than it has less power than the 500 or 560, and uses almost as much fuel.
The first years of the ML - up to 2001 - had a braking only traction control system, the 2002 and after had a more sophisticated system. I had a 2001, that the previous owner had sorted all the early issues out of, and had no issues with it (other than a CEL light that was the result of loose vacuum line). We've had a recent discussion on the difficulty of finding new parts for some of the older MBs (123), and there have been suggestions that we might not want older cars anymore, to buy ten years old or newer. All cars are disposable now. Just for grins, go drive a 2012 or newer Passat . . . .
