If there has been a change in the last ten years, than maybe so.
Otherwise, all my friends who didn't believe it, do now due to
separation events after they rotated tires across sides.

We have Nokian WRG2s on our '95 E320 that have been on both sides of the
car (and on the 'E420 that Kaleb now has) and have no tread separation.

I have always marked tires when switching summer to winter and back.

BUT I have purchased used radial tires that have not been marked, and not noticed any difference. I bought a set of 4 used blizzaks for the SDL, and another used set for the van. Wore them all out with good service, so either I won the 50/50 coin toss eight times in a row, of it didn't matter is you switched direction. The former is not likely, so I'm guessing the latter, at least with Blizzaks.

In regard to Kaleb's comment about Michelins being worth the money, 40 years ago when they were all made in France, I thought so... but every michelin I had slipped its belts. (the wobble) So I no longer think they are worth the money. YMMV, mine did...
