An opened can of sardines in a cage trap works for possums and raccoons. Some people use poison peanut bits obtainable in a cone shaped container from Home Depot or Walmarts for smaller underground animals that chew on underground electric cable. It's reasonably humane since death from internal bleeding is fairly fast and not extremely painful; probably more humane than slow death from natural causes. Don't know if groundhogs would eat peanuts. Gerry
