When I was a kid we would collect them and put them in the gravel
driveway or side road and let the cars run over them awhile. You have
to get them when the husks are all brown and rotted, the green husks are
like bowling balls. My granddaddy, who probably had some sort of OCD,
would then spend hours going at them with a hammer and whatever else to
get a small bowlfull of them, which my grandmother would use to make
cookies that vanished immediately.

When we lived in the San Luis Obispo area, one of the back roads had
volunteer black walnut trees along the fence lines. A lot of the nuts
fell onto the county right-of-way. We picked up a number of them in
paper
shopping bags and took them home.
Shirley's method of cracking them was a plastic pan about
10"x14"x5"H, a
brick, and a hammer. It was not an easy task cracking them. Definitely
black walnut, juglans nigra.
