The way to get accurate milage calculations is to do them over several tanks. this will average out the differences in fill, although it won't help much with pump variations unless you always use the same pump -- I can to and from work, but on the road, no. Otherwise fill the same way at as close to the same rate as you can every time you fill up, whether it be stop when the foam shuts off the pump or until you cannot get more fuel in, doesn't matter. The only way to get really accurate milage numbers is to weigh the fuel, though.

And don't forget that the only place in the supply chain the variation in volume with temperature is NOT calculated is at the dispensing pump -- as the summer tails off the fuel will be warmer than earlier by a few degrees and you will get less fuel (by weight) than in Spring when the ground is colder.
