My '84 190D had more repair than original pipe. I had already replaced the 
section with the mufflers but the section from the manifold to the mufflers was 
just tinfoil. When I started I'd wrap it with some thin metal and weld that on. 
By the end I bought repair pieces from FLAPS and welded them in. I finally got 
tired of it and replaced the pipes when it failed 3 times in one week each time 
just beyond where I had put in my last repair...
I've got a snowmobile muffler I've been repairing for years, a replacement pipe 
is more expensive than the whole machine. Once the snow flies this year that 
one is for sale, I've already got its replacement.

Being a Diesel, you can bandaid and scab away with abandon, no carbon 
monoxide concerns.

My rusty 240D has lotsa banaids and hose clamps.  So many that I had 
to use coathangers to hold it up in the middle.  It would sag between 
the bandaids and hang down and scrape the pavement.

I need a new front section some year....  if the car lasts that long.

On my 110s, the vibration would crack the pipe in front of the 
muffler, sometimes ruining the muffler.  At the time, welch's grape 
juice came in a 6 oz. smooth side steel can.  Those made perfect 
bandaids for the small OM621 exhaust pipe.  I got to where I'd never 
try to have the pipes put together  as designed.  I'd use the can and 
2 hose clamps to make a "flexible coupling" and never again had a 
muffler ruined.
