I pulled the door handle off our Dodge Aspen when I went up to DeKalb, IL once to retrieve my brother from graduate school. Rain then very cold, door gasket froze, crappy zinc diecast handle just snapped. Dealer said it was VERY common, and the new parts were somewhat thicker than the old.

I vastly prefer Benz.

Quite a few broken door handles at the auto auction, where there is little to no ice or snow. I don't remember brands, but the BMWs had quite a bit of broken stuff, and I think one had a broken door handle. I do know that VWs of the 80s were notorious for having flimsy pot metal door handles that broke unless you were very gentle. I always tried to intercept any non family person who might ride int he car, so I could open the door without breaking the handle. Everyone I let open a door broke a handle. I broke 1 or 2 before I learned and swmbo broke 1 or 2.

My conclusion is that all the brands other than MB has flimsy door handles, a thing they learned from VW. AND, I don't know about post 126 MBs. They may be flimsy too

But IF you pay 80k or whatever the BMW cost new, would it be unreasonable to expect the driver's door handle NOT to break?

I think not...
