Memory that does not meet Apple specs does all sorts of crazy things,  
I had exactly the same issue on my MDD until I pulled on of the  
"sticks".  I suggest that they all be exactly the same, no matter what  
they are -- my "new" Mac Pro refused to boot until I pulled the  
factory sticks, seems that they were not compatible with the ones I  
installed.
