This one has good bones but it’s going to need some cosmetics. Tomorrow the fun begins with the finish recovery, along with the removal of some really dated widow tint.
The guy from Sacramento who recovers Mercedes leather interiors got me a full front set of leather, including the armrest cover and a new horsehair pad for $360 shipped to me. That’s supposed to arrive on Tuesday, but I’ll wait until the weekend to tackle it. AC needs a charge, checked it with just a quick shot this afternoon and it ran and held pressure. I’ll probably pull it completely down tomorrow while I’m working on the paint to see how much of a leak it has. The PO said he used to have to top it off annually, which could very well be nothing more than a porous low pressure hose, which wouldn’t be unusual for this vintage car. Cruise doesn’t work (yeah, I drove 1,000 miles in 13 hours with NO CRUISE!) but I have a rebuilt amp ready to go in. Needs tires. The Michelins that are on it are from 2009 and really dry rotted. My tire guy has a deal running on Falkens right now that can put a nice set on for about $350 installed. I have some really nice Euro headlights in the wings, but I wasn’t planning on having to put tires on it, so those will have to wait. Driver’s window may need a regulator. It does the “click-click-click” thing at the top of the travel and the window doesn’t close all the way. Is this fixable or am I going to need a regulator? Driver’s seat adjustment switches need cleaning. They’re not reliable, but the memory definitely works and all of the seat adjustments work, too. Needs a hood pad. That’s a major day long job. Haven’t decided whether to go MB or Dynamat - the cost is about the same. A number of people in the W126 forum on BW swear the Dynamat stuff is really good. Gotta sort out the stereo. PPO had a “professional” install a Sony head unit. In doing so, they gutted the ash tray and the wood surround around the radio opening. If anyone sees these cars at the knackers and can snag me a complete ash tray and the frame it goes in, let me know. Lower console wood is trash. Got a couple of people on the hook with decent replacements. Today, in my lack of sleep daze, I got the following done: Oil/filter change, Delo 15W-40 Injector return lines replaced Air filter replaced Bottle of Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst in the half tank of fuel that’s in it Drained and refilled power steering with MB fluid (it had M1 ATF in it) and replaced the PS filter Vacuumed out the body drains (is there an MB out there without a ton of leaves under the hood???) Repaired a broken wire on what appears to be a sender on the cooling system at the top front of the engine, right next to the fuel filter. Single terminal, so it’s probably the gauge sender. Might be the reason why it never seemed to go above 80C no matter what. Washed it. I need to do the fuel filters, too, but I just had to call it quits before I screwed something up. Maybe tomorrow. I have a bottle of Diesel Purge, but I’m not sure I want to do it, as it seems to be running fine. Seems like it would be a waste if it’s running OK? Your thoughts? Tomorrow, up and at ‘em early, and the Martha’ing will commence on the paint. Should be interesting - I’ll take lots of pictures.
