Since I don’t have the original owner’s service records, I can’t substantiate
engine rebuild/rod replacement, etc. However, with the help of my dealer guy
and the VMI from Mercedes, we were able to determine that some really
substantial work, possibly as much as five figures worth, was done under
warranty on the car at around 43k in 1993. The independent shop who took care
of it for some years knew the car but couldn’t recall anything specific as far
as major work - all they could tell me (and this was the son of the owner, who
has taken over since the owner’s retirement) was that the PPO would drop the
car off and write a check. I suspect they made a lot of boat payments for the
shop owner based on what they did tell me.

Considering that it runs very well with no noise, almost no smoke, and used no
oil in a thousand mile high speed drive, I’m satisfied that there’s nothing
sinister lurking under the hood or elsewhere.

So that’s where I’m at. Thanks a lot to Curly, Jaime and others who helped me
parse out the information I could find to help make the decision on whether or
not to be comfortable with it. I am.

I know it hasn’t had mounts for over six years/30k miles. That’s probably not
a service interval, but mounts are cheap relatively speaking and I don’t mind
putting a set on it. Once that’s done if I still feel like it’s vibrating too
much I’ll check elsewhere. Do realize that I have been driving vergassers for
nearly 15 years, so my point of reference is pretty far from the operating
characteristics of a diesel. As I become more familiar and comfortable with
the car I my realize that my concerns are unfounded.
