Whats the wife drive? Wasn't she a lover of big SUVs?
I feel like if you're going to drive an older car you ought to have a spare in
case things go wrong. Also if you're going to drive an older car long term you
need to fix everything that goes wrong immediately. Otherwise you fall out of
love with the car and each additional thing that needs fixing becomes "aww man,
another thing thats wrong." if you fix each thing then you only have one thing
wrong at a time.
So my advice is to fix everything on the '01 and the pickup and drive the '01
some. If you fall back in love with it then keep 'em all. If you don't then
sell the '01, keep the 2000 and the pickup and drive 'em both until the wheels
fall off, then reconsider.
You could sell the '01 now but as you've already estimated you'll take a bath
on it, only bottom feeders buy cars that already have a problem.
