For reasons only I may comprehend, I like the earlier tranny in the $100 car (79 300SD). It works perfectly as do the rest of the fleet I just like the way it works better.

When dealing with used cars, condition is often MUCH more responsible for satisfaction than the design of the car/engine/transmission/etc. I owned a '60 220Sb and a 61 220b. The former was designed to be the more powerful and luxurious car, but MY 220b was far nicer on the highway and delivered better economy. Still, I kept the 220Sb for almost 10 years and sold the 220b after owning it for only a couple of years (to buy my first diesel).
