Unlike the tandem leveling/power steering pumps used in the 124 TDs, the
pumps used on all of the 123 TDs were cam driven (like the 190E-16V
pumps) and aside from occasionally requiring replacement (they tend to
last the life of the engine) they give almost NO trouble. A few have
required rebuilding, but I think this results from REALLY poor
maintenance (not changing pods when they fail, not ever changing fluid
and filter) or really AWFUL operating conditions (really dusty
environment). I've NEVER heard of one failing and taking out a timing
chain. If power consumption were an issue, I wouldn't think they'd leave
them on cars that were raced!
