I must disagree about the halfway job. I've done more than a dozen of these, and every one worked when I was done with it. Several took more than one resoldering. VDO did a bad job in those years. And if you don't remove the conformal coating, you get a bunch of burned varnish all over the place, contaminating things. Paint stripper. It's fast, and easy. The biggest problems are the larger leads, but plenty of smaller ones had problems too. Oddly, the capacitors were rarely the problem.
