there must be a name for marketing taking precedence over quality and the
consequent fall in quality of a product. Same at MB. THe marketing book I'm
reading that uses MB as an example (for the whole book) documents the take
over by marketing very well (early to mid 90's) - imagine that!
I'm a marketing manager in "real life" and it is
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO short-sighted to do things like that, that
I can barely comprehend it. Customer satisfaction, retention, happy customer
to prospective buyer friend - these are not part of marketing? It blows my
mind. Ultimately, MARKETING DOESN'T care. If your salary/bonus is based on how
much $ you bring in over your relatively short career (esp if moving around to
another company every ten years - THE NORM) then screw the product and the
company, pull in $ short term, piss the customers off, get paid big bucks for
being a totall ass and move on. It's sick.

Mobil had people that knew how to make GREAT oil, but hadn't a clue
about sales/marketing. Exxon has seldom spent even a penny on making a
superior product, but would spend as much as needed to sell what they
had. What is happening is what I suspected would happen when they bought
Mobil. The next move could be to cheapen down the cost of making the
Mobil line (they haven't YET). I'm afraid they'll introduce a line of
group III oils (or dilute down the Mobil 1 line) soon if they can't make
a big enough profit margin on their group IV/V product(s).
