40,000 lb tandem is a heavy axle to drag around unless it is
expected to gross over 80,000.  And my experience is that the deep
low gears of a 15 speed - or an 18 speed - are much more suited to
those kinds of loads.  But, the only ones I drove were all
mechanical 14 L Cummins (BC3) and so maybe the "modern" 2007
engine has a wide enough torque band that a 13 speed is just fine
at 90,000 GVW.  Terrain also makes a difference.  CO, MT, PA, etc
are more demanding than TX, OK, KS, NE, IA, IL, MO, etc.

My first-hand experience is now getting out-of-date.

That's normal for a OTR truck.  With the 40,000 lb tandem, I was
expecting the steer to be 14,000 lb or a bit more.  I drove one
truck with (I think) 16,000 steer.  It was rather handy to be able
to shift the load to the steer if the front of the trailer was
heavy to keep the axle loading legal.

I see quite a few for sale that seem proud of that feature.  I
_know_ I would prefer one - but I'd probably choose _much_ older
if I actually got to choose.

Ugh!  Maybe it's the wrong time of year?  Many buyers are busy
with other stuff and spending money.  I have always though that
March or April was a better time to sell a truck - but that is
based on almost to evidence.
