I asked my mechanic son about your problem and if there was anything special about a 96 Chevy.

He said not. He agreed that you need to tighten up the rear shoes to the point where they drag a bit.

He said that even if the front brakes were fine before you started working on the rear brakes, the brakes would not feel right until you got the back brakes set up properly.
