There is enough room on the ones I have worked on up to OM603.   From what you describe, it seems like you have a leak at the IP, but I don't know the plumbing on that engine.  normally you have a filter in, a filter out, and a collection point for return lines mounted on top of the filter housing.   Everything is in series.     It sounds like your fuel is clean before the IP, then bubbly coming out of the IP?

Ship it here, and I'll give ya $400 fer it.   Its dead

Yeah, guys, I know there’s air intrusion. That’s pretty obvious, even to
someone who’s worked on diesels from 5 HP to over 2000 HP. I’m just trying to
figure out from where….

I’m going with the nuclear option, and replacing all hoses, fittings and O
rings. Believe it or not, the whole of everything is barely $50 from Mercedes
my cost, so it’s silly not to do it. Considering that the intake manifold has
to come off to get to everything it only makes sense to replace it all while
I’m in there.

Curley, is there enough room to remove/replace the check valve on the engine
side of the injection pump without removing the pump? I may do it as well while
I’m in there.
