My '78 240D has a knob on the dash which advances the IP somewhat for cold
It just pulls on the throttle linkage a bit. High idle, in other words. Newer cars do the same thing automatically, via idle speed regulation. So far as I know, timing on these cars is _only_ affected by RPM.
