Yeah, my wife's 2005 Golf is hard on pads.
As you say I put a little ceramic grease on the shoulder. I actually had to 
scrape corrosion off them to be able to get the pads in...

The trick is to use just a little bit of lubricant on the shoulder that carries 
the pads. Better yet, remove the pads seasonally for cleanup etc.
