Stake (sundial) shadows have nothing to do with trees or buildings in the area,
which is the usual problem when siting solar.  It's either in the shade, or it 
is not,
you don't need an algorithm to determine that.  You only need one stake, or your
address, to determine sun angle.  (I.e., your latitude.)

I believe the original problem posed is determining the impingement on the
'solar window' at various potential backyard sites.  There are a number of ways
to determine that.
