I *think* the facelift (2000-2002, 2003 for the wagon) cars have additional structural rigidity, or something related to the safety of the passengers.

That said, A.M. Booth drove Mercedes for the safety aspect. At least two members here have been in crashes that may have turned out differently in a lesser marque. Safer is better. Worth a thought.
