It sounds like the real issue was probably the poor condition of the
spare tire that blew out before the collision. They were likely just
driving too fast on a junk tire so it may not have mattered who was
driving. If the left front tire blew out, the truck probably changed
lanes to the left before there was time to react. Unfortunately they
were meeting the van at the same time. A second or two, sooner or later
and the truck might have have crossed into the ditch and missed the van.
The speed limit was 75 mph and if they were each traveling at close to
that speed, their closing rate was something around 150 feet per second.
