As my brother the mechanic points out: Fuel, compression, spark.  You need all 
three.
For 'sudden', but quiet failures it's either a clogged fuel system, or a 
failure of the spark.
Change the plug, check that it sparks suitably when you pull the rope.  It is 
unlikely that
the timing slipped, not the way they're constructed.  (More magneto than 
otherwise.)

It's usually a fuel problem.  (Two-strokes need a good crankcase seal, else 
they don't work.
Those can age and eventually fail.  Not sure how you test/prove those.)

Pull the carb and clean it.  Maybe even drop $15 on a new one.  Make sure the 
fuel pickup
sinker in the tank is in good shape, that its feed hoses aren't leaking air.  I 
had to replace
that on my 036 not too long ago.  Plastic/rubber sucks almost as hard as 
batteries, and
does not last forever.
